It is no secret that as we age, the skin’s collagen content diminishes, it’s hydration becomes more and more difficult and fine lines turn into deep wrinkles. Tell tale signs of an aging skin have become so common and predictable that even wrinkles are being given nick names depending on which part of the face they appear. Hats off to those who believe in growing old gracefully, but being told that you have a bar code along your top lip (typical smokers lines) or a number 11 imprinted on your forehead (furrows in between the eyebrows) or even puppet lines (lines from the edge of your nose to the corners of the mouth) will knock even the strongest of confidences. The great news is that it’s never too late to do something about them. The “bar code” is caused by strong lip muscles which have created vertical lines around the mouth, These are more common in smokers but also in people who overuse their facial muscles. The above combined with sun worshipping, fine or dry skin and stress cause the lines to become so deep that they appear like scars. A common complaint amongst women is no longer being able to wear lipstick as it bleeds into these lines throughout the day or evening highlighting them. Many women fear to seek treatment as they think that treatment will be painful or that they will end up with “big lips”. The treatment is carried out using local anaesthetic so that the patient feels nothing. The lines are then filled in meticulously, the volume of the lips remains unchanged, and a very natural appearance is created. Relaxing the muscles with Botox helps the treatment to be longer lasting. For very deep persistent lines IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) or lazer can completely eradicate residual scars. The two deep furrows (number 11) in the forehead which are common in both men and women (well men have to age somewhere!) must be treated with Botox to relax the strong muscles in between the eyebrows as well as filler to fill in the deep lines. “Puppet Lines” (lines from the corner of the nose to the corner of the mouth) can be painlessly treated with fillers changing a face from sad to happy in the space of 30mins. Unfortunately no one is immune to the aging process. 30 years ago people had no choice but to accept the visible signs of aging on their faces unless they resorted to invasive surgery. Today we have a choice to either accept wrinkles and folds and the nicknames that ensue or we can use the fantastic innovative methods available to us today to make us look and feel quite a few years younger and help us to enjoy life to the full.
